More about Safe Routes to School:
There is a wealth of personal and societal benefit in the simple practice of walking to school. In the past 30 years, active commuting has quietly taken second place to car culture, and today a mere 13% of children arrive at school on their own two feet. The results are skyrocketing rates of childhood obesity, related health problems, environmental degradation, safety and general quality of life issues, which disproportionately affect urban poor, new immigrants and people of color.
